Frequent Questions

  • What does Habitat for Humanity do?

Habitat for Humanity builds simple, affordable homes with families, couples and individuals in need of housing. We also assist qualifying homeowners with critical home repairs that enable them to remain in their homes.

  • How can I get involved?

Habitat is funded by donations, grants and matching funds, as well as being largely staffed by volunteers. We are always in need of individuals willing to pitch in to help a neighbor in need. Visit our How You Can Help section to find out ways to donate or volunteer.

  • If I were to donate funds, how is my money used?

All contributions are used where most needed: construction materials, land acquisition, building permits, subcontractor fees, other construction expenses, and administrative costs.
You may specify which program or cost that you wish to support.

  • What is your organization's privacy policy?

Our organization takes our privacy policy seriously and takes steps to protect and ensure the safety of our supporters. We do not sell or otherwise disclose information about our volunteers or supporters outside of our immediate organization. This policy has no exceptions. We do not sell or exchange your information with any other organizations, public, private or nonprofit. For more detailed information visit our Privacy Policy page.

  • Are Habitat houses free?

No. In addition to the hundreds of hours of sweat equity that homeowners put into the building of their homes, they purchase their homes through a low or no-interest mortgage provided by Putnam County Habitat for Humanity, or through a USDA Direct Loan.

  • How are homeowners selected?

Families, couples or individuals in need of decent shelter apply to Putnam County Habitat for Humanity. The Homeowner Selection Committee assesses each applicant’s level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay a low or no-interest mortgage loan. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing who qualifies for a Habitat home; however, applicants must be residents of, or employed in Putnam County for at least one year prior to their application.

  • Can I volunteer even if I can’t build?

Yes. Habitat needs volunteers to work on many tasks, including working on special events, mentoring families, fundraising, preparing mailings, and providing coffees and lunches at the construction site. Call our office for more information.
